Frequently Asked Questions

About RMHC SA

RMHC SA is a non-profit organisation that supports the health and well-being of children and their families by providing accommodation, comfort spaces, and access to essential healthcare resources during times of critical care.

We opened our first programme in 2012, and since then, we’ve expanded to include the Ronald McDonald House, Family Rooms, Care Mobiles, and specialised initiatives like Lactation Centres.

McDonald’s South Africa is our founding and sustaining partner, helping fund operations through in-store campaigns, corporate support, and volunteer engagement. However, RMHC SA is an independent non-profit with its own board and governance

For Families

Families with a child receiving medical treatment at a partnering hospital can apply to stay, subject to space availability and medical referral.

No. Accommodation at the Ronald McDonald House and Family Rooms is provided at no charge, thanks to the generosity of our donors and partners.

Our House includes private family rooms, communal kitchens, play areas, laundry facilities, and quiet spaces for rest and reflection.

Families are usually referred through hospital social workers or medical staff. You can also contact us directly via our website’s “Stay with Us” form.

For Donors

Your contribution directly supports our programmes — from providing meals and accommodation for families to funding mobile healthcare services and NICU Lactation Centre operations.

Yes. We encourage group volunteering and can tailor activities to your team’s size and skills.

About Our Programmes

It’s a space within a hospital where families can rest, eat, and recharge without leaving the hospital grounds — keeping them close to their child’s bedside.

The Lactation Centre at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital provides mothers of NICU babies with a safe, supportive environment to express breast milk, ensuring premature and critically ill babies receive optimal nutrition.
