The Lactation Centre provides a private and supportive space for mothers to express milk while their babies are receiving medical care. We offer guidance, counselling, and resources to promote breastfeeding.
Here, mothers receive guidance from lactation experts and have access to safe equipment for expressing breast milk. This program has served more than 11 000 mothers and continues to play a vital role in ensuring NICU babies receive the best possible start in life.

The Lactation Centre at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital provides mothers of NICU babies with a safe, supportive environment to express breast milk, ensuring premature and critically ill babies receive optimal nutrition.
We opened our first programme in 2012, and since then, we’ve expanded to include the Ronald McDonald House, Family Rooms, Care Mobiles, and specialised initiatives like Lactation Centres.
On average, RMHC SA supports 3,259 families annually through our House, Family Rooms, and Lactation Centre.
